OpenSuse completely supports my Notebook!
Good news for Dell Inspiron Users: Your notebook is completely supported in OpenSuse 10.2
You can check out these tutorials for getting ubuntu run on Dell Inspiron and this one for Fedora. What do both have in common? Massive manual configuration encompassing kernel recompilations and what not.
However in OpenSuse 10.2, I didnt have to do any special configuration at all to get my hardware running. OpenSuse 10.1 supported everything except the MMC card reader (from Ricoh). Now this is supportedd aswell.
However one thing that is not supported is hardly openSuse's fault: The Connexant Modem. Connexant Modems are notorious for their proprietory hardware standards and focus on the Windows users! Besides I hardly use a dialup connection so this is irrelevant for me. For those reader who do use dial-up connections, I would suggest that you get those cheap external modems (hardly $30).
Ubuntu came to fame purely through marketting and hype! I believe that OpenSuse is the better Desktop/Notebook distro and without any proportional marketting/advocacy large parts of the human population will be deprieved of the 'better' Linux. I personally will soon get a pack of DVD's and spread it amongst my friends.

sure… it worked for you.
That “hyped (and obviously quite inferior)” distrobution Ubuntu Edgy, worked perfectly with my Acer 5050.
the “best” linux Suse 10.2 didn’t detect the hd sound card(no sound) didn’t detect the ethernet( a dead simple realtek 8139) and didn’t work with wireless.
does this mean Suse is inferior because it didn’t work for me on this computer?
Well, it is inferior for me( I actually loved it on my desktop) but it may be the best out there for someone else(like you).
Now, I am nota Ubuntu Fanboi, but its what worked for me, and I repect it for that. And now that i’ve started using it, I have begun to apreciate not running into dependency hell every time I turn the corner. No distrobution is perfect.

Right I agree with you that there is no “universal Linux distro”. But as I see it is that Ubuntu is “hyped” more than other distros, maybe because they’ve got a great deal of funding behind them.

Hey irfan, could you mail me a copy of OpenSUSE 10.2 ? I’d download it, but download speeds in India are teh crap and It’d probably take me 3-4 days to finish.

@Erythro
I’m in Pakistan, it’ll probably take 1 week to post it! I have committed myself to spreading Suse 10.2 atleast in my immediate area (http://www.linuxpakistan.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=32050#32050)
